The Ross Performance Parts JZ engine platform has been designed with a hydraulic timing belt tensioner capable of providing precise and reliable belt tension for factory tuned cars, all the way up to 4-digit power levels. The weak link in Toyota’s engineering is the thin, cast aluminium timing belt idler tensioner bracket.
These units have been known to snap when power levels are increased beyond stock; if an engine is driven hard; or with regular applications of the rev limiter (who doesn’t enjoy this?).
The chance of failure is further exacerbated when valve-trains are upgraded with stiffer springs and larger cams. When the factory cast bracket fails it can result in anything from bent valves, through to a completely destroyed engine. A guaranteed long and expensive fix.
